What Is a Gate Eye?
A gate eye is the female half of a weld-on gate hinge. It’s a steel ring welded to a flat or radius base plate, which you weld directly onto the gate itself. The gate eye drops over the gate pin — the male half — which is welded to the post. Together they form the hinge.
Like the gate pin, gate eyes come in flat and radius profiles. They’re the standard hinge fitting for farm gates, field gates, estate gates, and any heavy gate hung from steel posts.
Flat vs Radius — What’s the Difference?
- Flat — the base plate is flat. Welds onto flat bar, box section, or angle sections on the gate frame.
- Radius — the base plate is curved. Use if your gate frame uses round tube (CHS) sections.
Most fabricated steel gates use flat bar or box section for the frame, so flat gate eyes are the standard choice.
Which Size Do I Need?
The gate eye must match the gate pin diameter exactly:
- 12mm (1/2″) — matches 12mm gate pin — lightweight and pedestrian gates
- 16mm (5/8″) — matches 16mm gate pin — medium-weight field gates
- 19mm (3/4″) — matches 19mm gate pin — most popular for agricultural use
- 22mm (7/8″) — matches 22mm gate pin — heavy-duty farm gates
- 25mm (1″) — matches 25mm gate pin — industrial and commercial gates
Always buy the same diameter eye as your pin. They’re not interchangeable between sizes.
