What Is an Adjustable Gate Eye Bolt?
An adjustable gate eye bolt is a bolt-on gate hinge fitting with a threaded shank and a ring (eye) at one end. You drill a hole through your gate post or wall, push the bolt through, and secure it with a nut on the back. The gate hangs on the eye, which sits over a gate pin or hook.
The key advantage over weld-on hinges is adjustability and fine-tune the alignment by adding washers or adjusting the nut. They’re also galvanised, making them ideal for timber posts and masonry where welding isn’t possible.
When to Use Adjustable Eye Bolts vs Weld-On Eyes
- Adjustable eye bolts — for timber gate posts, masonry pillars, concrete posts, or anywhere you can’t weld. Also useful where you need to adjust gate alignment after installation.
- Weld-on gate eyes — for fabricated steel gate posts where you’re welding the frame anyway.
Most farm gate setups using timber posts will use adjustable eye bolts. Steel post setups typically use weld-on pins and eyes.
Which Size Do I Need?
Two dimensions matter — the pin diameter (must match your gate pin) and the shank length (must be long enough to pass through your post):
Pin diameters:
- 12mm — lightweight gates, garden gates
- 16mm — standard field gates
- 19mm — heavy field gates, agricultural use — most popular
- 22mm — heavy-duty farm gates
- 25mm — industrial and commercial gates
Shank lengths:
- 101mm (4″) — timber posts up to about 75mm thick
- 125mm (5″) — timber posts up to about 100mm thick
- 152mm (6″) — standard timber gate posts (typically 100-125mm)
- 203mm (8″) — thicker timber posts or masonry pillars
- 254mm (10″) — deep masonry or double-skin walls
Measure your post thickness and add 25-30mm for the nut and washer on the back. If in doubt, go longer — you can always cut the excess thread off.

2 per gate for standard height gates, 3 for tall or heavy gates. Each adjustable eye bolt acts as one hinge point — the gate pin drops into the eye.
