M16 x 50mm CE marked bolt set — Grade 8.8 bolt, nut and washer. Common M16 length for portal frame eaves and apex end plate connections.
What Are CE Marked Bolts?
CE marked bolts are structural bolting assemblies tested and certified to BS EN 15048. Each set includes a bolt, nut, and washer manufactured as a matched assembly — they’re tested together, not individually. The CE mark confirms the assembly meets the mechanical performance requirements for non-preloaded structural bolting in steel construction.
In practical terms, if you’re building a portal frame, these are the bolts that connect your end plates, cleats, bracing, and eaves beam brackets to the steel frame. Building control and structural engineers will specify CE marked bolts on connection drawings because they need documented proof that the fixings meet the design loads.
What Grade Are These Bolts?
Our CE marked bolt sets are Grade 8.8 — the standard grade for structural steelwork connections in the UK. Grade 8.8 means the bolt has a tensile strength of 800 N/mm² and a yield strength of 640 N/mm². This is the grade your engineer will specify on connection drawings for portal frame buildings.
Each set includes an 8.8 bolt, a Grade 8 nut, and a hardened washer, all CE marked as a matched assembly.
Which Size Do I Need?
Bolt size is specified on your engineer’s connection drawings. The two key dimensions are the diameter (M12, M16, M20, M24) and the length. As a general guide for standard portal frame connections:
- M12 — purlin cleats, side rail cleats, lighter bracing connections
- M16 — end plate connections on smaller frames (178 x 102 UB rafters), some bracing
- M20 — end plate connections on medium to larger frames (203 x 133 UB and 254 x 146 UB rafters), eaves beam brackets
- M24 — heavier connections, larger portal frames
The bolt length depends on the combined thickness of the plates being connected plus the nut and washer. Your engineer’s drawing will specify both diameter and length, always check before ordering.
How Many Bolts Per Connection?
This depends on the connection type and the loads involved, but as a rough guide for typical agricultural portal frames:
- Apex end plate — typically 6 bolts (3 rows of 2)
- Eaves end plate — typically 6 bolts (3 rows of 2)
- Purlin cleat — typically 2 bolts per cleat
- Bracing connection — typically 2-4 bolts per plate
For a 6-bay shed with 7 frames, you might need 84 bolts just for the apex and eaves connections, plus another 80-120 for purlins and bracing. Always count from your drawings rather than estimating.
What Else Do I Need?
Each CE bolt set already includes the bolt, nut, and washer, it’s a complete assembly ready to use. For a full portal frame build, you’ll typically also need holding down bolts for the base connections and coach bolts if you’re fixing timber purlins to the cleats.
