What Is an Apex End Plate?
An apex end plate forms the bolted connection between the two rafters at the ridge (apex) of a portal frame. The apex connection transfers bending moment and shear between the rafters, completing the rigid frame. Like the eaves connection, two apex end plates are bolted face-to-face on site using high-strength bolts.
The apex is typically a lower-loaded connection than the eaves, so apex end plates are usually smaller with fewer bolt rows. A small apex haunch may be included to facilitate the connection geometry, particularly where the roof pitch creates an angle between the two rafter ends.
Choosing the Right Apex End Plate
Match the apex end plate to your rafter section:

Both rafters at the apex are the same section, so the apex end plates are symmetrical, no offset versions needed.
How Many Apex End Plates Do I Need?
Each frame has 1 apex connection using 2 end plates. For a 6-bay building with 7 frames = 7 apex connections = 14 apex end plates.
