What Are Z Purlin Cleats?
Z purlin cleats are steel brackets that connect cold-formed Z section purlins to the rafters of a portal frame building. Unlike timber purlin cleats (which are welded to the rafter), Z purlin cleats can be either bolt on or weld on.
Z purlins are lighter and span further than timber purlins, so they’re commonly used on larger buildings or where reduced weight is important. The cleat transfers the load from the purlin into the rafter.
How Many Z Purlin Cleats Per Building?
Same principle as timber cleats — one cleat per purlin per frame crossing. The quantity depends on your purlin layout, but a typical 6-bay shed with Z purlins might need 100-200 cleats. Your engineer’s purlin layout drawing will confirm the exact count.
Fixings
Z purlin cleats are pre-drilled for M16 bolts. You’ll need M16 bolts to fix the cleat to the rafter and to fix the Z purlin to the cleat. Check your engineer’s specification for the bolt grade required.
