Single connection plate (gusset plate) for portal frame wind bracing. Welded to the column or rafter, this plate provides the bolted connection point for a single bracing member. Pre-drilled for standard bolt patterns.

What Is Wind Bracing?

Wind bracing is a diagonal structural system that stops a portal frame building from racking (leaning sideways) under wind loads. While the portal frames themselves resist forces in their own plane, bracing provides stability along the length of the building. Without it, the building has no resistance to wind hitting the gable ends and could collapse sideways like a row of dominoes.

Bracing typically runs diagonally in the roof plane and in the walls, connecting frames together. It’s usually made from steel hollow sections or flat bars that bolt to connection plates (gusset plates) welded to the columns and rafters.

How Does Bracing Work?

The diagonal bracing members transfer wind forces from the gable end back to the foundations through the braced bay. A typical bracing arrangement uses an X-pattern (cross bracing) with members working in tension — whichever way the wind blows, one diagonal is always pulling tight and resisting the force.

The key components are:

  • Connection plates (single or double) — welded to the column or rafter, these provide the bolted fixing point for the bracing members
  • Bracing end plates — welded to the end of each bracing member, drilled to bolt onto the connection plate
  • Bracing end caps — seal the ends of hollow section bracing members

Single vs Double Connection Plates

Single connection plates are used where only one bracing member connects to a point on the frame — typically at the top or bottom of a diagonal run.

Double connection plates are used where two bracing members meet at the same point — typically at the centre of an X-brace where the diagonals cross, or at a node where roof bracing and wall bracing converge.

How Much Bracing Per Building?

A standard portal frame building needs bracing in at least one bay on each side wall, plus roof bracing. For a typical 6-bay agricultural shed:

  • Wall bracing: 1 braced bay per side wall (sometimes 2 for longer buildings), each bay has 2 diagonal members in an X-pattern
  • Roof bracing: runs in the roof plane from the braced bay to the gable end

The exact quantity of connection plates and end plates depends on your bracing layout. Your engineer’s bracing plan will show exactly what’s needed at each node.
