What Is an Eaves End Plate?

An eaves end plate forms the bolted connection between the column and the rafter at the eaves of a portal frame building. This is the most critical connection in the frame, it carries the highest bending moment and must transfer both vertical and horizontal forces between the column and rafter.

The eaves end plate is welded to the beam end and drilled with a standard bolt hole pattern. On site, two end plates are bolted face-to-face with high-strength bolts to complete the moment-resisting connection. The eaves joint also typically includes a haunch section welded to the underside of the rafter, which increases the effective depth of the connection.

Choosing the Right Eaves End Plate

Match the end plate to your rafter and column sections as shown on your engineer’s connection detail drawing:

If your column and rafter are different sections, you may need an offset end plate on the gable ends. Check your drawings or send us a photo on WhatsApp and we’ll confirm.

How Many Eaves End Plates Do I Need?

Each portal frame has 2 eaves connections (left and right side). Each eaves connection uses a pair of end plates bolted together. For a 6-bay building with 7 frames, that’s 14 eaves connections = 28 eaves end plates.
