What Are Purlin Cleats?
Purlin cleats are small steel brackets that connect timber purlins and side rails to the steel frame of a portal frame building. Purlins run horizontally across the roof between frames, supporting the roof sheeting. Side rails do the same job on the walls. Without cleats, there’s no way to fix the timber to the steel.
Cleats are shop-welded to the rafter or column before the steelwork goes to site (except bolt-on types, which are fixed on site). On site, the timber purlin is bolted through the cleat using coach bolts.
Single vs Double Cleats — Which Do I Need?
Single cleats (LH or RH) support the purlin from one side only. They’re used at intermediate frames where purlins lap over the top of the rafter. The left-hand and right-hand versions are mirror images of each other, you need both to support purlins lapping from alternating directions. Check your purlin layout drawing to confirm which hand goes where.
Double cleats support the purlin from both sides of the rafter web. They’re used where two purlins butt together at a frame (rather than lapping), or at positions where higher wind or snow loads require a stronger connection.
Purlin Cleat Fixings
Timber purlins are bolted to cleats on site using M12 coach bolts. You’ll need one coach bolt per cleat. We sell M12 coach bolts individually, order them alongside your cleats to keep everything in one delivery.
