Our 400 x 400 x 15mm base plate suits larger portal frame columns, typically 203 x 133 / 254 x 146 UB sections. 15mm thick for higher load applications. Laser-cut, CE-marked and ready to weld
What Is a Base Plate?
A base plate is a flat steel plate welded to the bottom of a portal frame column. It sits on the concrete foundation and is secured using holding down bolts, connecting the steel frame to the ground. The plate spreads the column load across a wider area of concrete, preventing the foundation from being crushed under concentrated forces. Every steel column in a portal frame building needs a base plate.
Which Size Do I Need?
Base plate size is specified on your engineer’s foundation drawing. The size depends on your column section and the loads it carries. As a general guide:
| Column Section | Base Plate Size | Typical Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| 152 x 152 UB / 178 x 102 UB | 300 x 200mm | 12mm |
| 178 x 102 UB / 203 x 133 UB | 300 x 300mm | 12mm or 15mm |
| 203 x 133 UB / 254 x 146 UB | 400 x 400mm | 15mm |
Always confirm against your drawings, base plate dimensions vary depending on the load case and foundation design.
How Many Per Building?
Every column needs one base plate. A single-span portal frame has 2 columns, so that’s 2 per frame. For a 6-bay shed with 7 frames = 14 base plates, plus extras for any gable posts (typically 4-8 more).
What Else Do I Need?
A complete base connection also requires holding down bolts (typically 4 per base), wax cone bolt boxes (one per bolt), and plate washers. Stiffener plates may also be needed at the base connection. We sell all of these individually, order exactly what you need for your build.
