19mm (3/4″) weld-on gate pin with flat base plate. The most popular size for agricultural field gates and estate gates on fabricated steel posts.
What Is a Gate Pin?
A gate pin is the male half of a weld-on gate hinge. It’s a steel pin welded to a flat or radius base plate, which you weld directly onto the gate post (the hanging stile). The gate eye — the female half — is welded to the gate itself and drops over the pin, creating the hinge point.
Gate pins are the standard hinge for farm gates, field gates, estate gates, and any heavy steel or timber gate hung from steel posts. They’re simple, strong, and allow the gate to be lifted on and off the posts without tools — useful for maintenance or when you need to get wide loads through an opening.
Flat vs Radius — What’s the Difference?
- Flat — the base plate is flat, designed to weld onto flat bar, box section, or RSA gate posts. This is the most common type for fabricated steel gate posts.
- Radius — the base plate is curved to match a round tube post (CHS). Use these if your gate posts are circular hollow section.
Choose based on your post profile. If you’re welding to a flat surface, use flat. If you’re welding to a round tube, use radius.
Which Pin Size Do I Need?
Pin diameter is matched to the gate eye. Common sizes:
- 12mm (1/2″) — lightweight gates, garden gates, pedestrian gates
- 16mm (5/8″) — medium-weight gates, standard field gates
- 19mm (3/4″) — heavy field gates, estate entrance gates — most popular size for agricultural use
- 22mm (7/8″) — heavy-duty gates, wide span farm gates
- 25mm (1″) — very heavy gates, industrial or commercial entrance gates
For agricultural field gates, 19mm is the most common choice. If in doubt, go one size up, a heavier pin will outlast a lighter one.
How Many Do I Need?
Each gate needs a minimum of 2 gate pins — one at the top and one at the bottom. Heavier or taller gates (over 1.8m) may need 3 for added support. A double gate setup needs 4 pins (2 per leaf).
What Else Do I Need?
Each gate pin needs a matching gate eye of the same diameter. You’ll need one pin per hinge point welded to the post, and one eye per hinge point welded to the gate. You may also want a gate latch or drop bolt to secure the gate when closed.
